Advising begins February 17: What to share with your advisees
Please share the following information with your advisees:
(1) Advising for summer and fall begins on February 17th. Students are required to meet with their advisors for registration release for fall. [Provide your advisees your link to schedule an advising appointment.]
(2) Summer classes are a great way to catch up or get ahead. The summer schedule in Student Planning is available on February 17th, and summer registration for all students opens on February 27th. Until March 20th, when fall registration opens, students do not need registration release to register for summer classes.
Students planning on taking summer courses at another institution need to submit the Transient Permit Form to Registration as a first step. The form is found in etrieve. Here’s how to find it:
- Open Jacket Connect
- Click on Campus Applications
- Then, click on Forms Central, etrieve
- Search “transient permit”
Students can use the online transfer guide to see how classes from other institutions will transfer to BW.
(3) Students needing help using the Student Planning tool should watch this video prior to their advising appointment. [Be sure to share your expectations with your advisees, such as having classes planned and sections selected before their advising appointment.]

Things to remember
A red hold box will display until a student has been successfully released for registration.
Registration times only show on the registration term (be sure you’re looking at Fall 2023 on the Course Plan screen).
Student’s registration time will display on their course plan page after they are released.
Registration times no longer display once the time passes.
Adult and Veteran students (UEVs) are exempt from registration release.
What's New?
Remember that students who are on the 2022 catalog have a slightly different international core requirement. These students can fulfill this requirement in one of three ways:
-
Complete two semesters of world language excluding World Languages & Literature courses taught in English. It does not need to be the same language.
- Earn academic credit in a BW-approved Global Explorations study abroad program.
- Take 2 approved international core-designated (I) courses from 2 different departments.

How does Jacket Connect impact advising?
- Most of the Campus Application links that were found on MyBW have moved to Jacket Connect. The Jacket Connect home page has direct links to My Records, to access Student Planning Tool and the Student Success Network. In addition, you will find a direct like to the One Stop website where you will find links to the Program Change form (changing your major, minor or advisor), Withdrawal, and the Online Transfer Guide.
- Remember: all advisors have access to our TEAMS site, “Academic Advising Resources for Faculty” that contains lots of great information and helpful videos/cheat sheets.
- Before advising begins, we recommend that you bookmark a few helpful advising-related BW webpages.

Retention & Student Success
In recent years, the prevalence of college students experiencing mental health challenges has risen significantly. Mental health difficulties impact academic performance, persistence, and wellness. Students often turn to faculty first when they are struggling, and thus, faculty are well-positioned to support students’ mental. We recognize however, that faculty are not necessarily clinicians. Please consider incorporating into your teaching and advising work, these 4 ways to support students’ mental health endorsed by the Jed Foundation (JED).
- Include information on graded assignments in your syllabus. Communicate with students regarding a general timeframe during which they will get feedback from you. Assigning graded work early in the semester will allow students to better incorporate feedback for improvement during the remainder of the semester.
- Set coursework assignments due by 5:00 p.m., instead of midnight or 9:00 a.m. to reinforce good sleep habits.
- Offer regular check-ins with students. Communicate office hours and appointment scheduling preferences both in your syllabus and in class. Remind students to contact you if they need assistance in class.
- Know campus resources and include them in your syllabus.

The Inside Higher Education article ‘5 Essential Ways of Knowing’ by Ben Harley and Mays Imad argues that, “if students are to tackle the complex challenges of the 21st century, they need a variety of skills that allow them to think beyond critical thinking.” Critical skills, or the five essential ways of knowing, are needed – critical thinking, critical feeling, critical imagining, critical engaging and critical being.
Advising on Advising
There’s still space in our February workshop, Advising Undeclared Students. It will take place Wednesday, February 22, from 1- 3:00 p.m. in the Center for Innovation and Growth (PARKER/HANNIFIN room).
