WHAT WE GOT TO SAY: RAP AND HIP HOP'S SOCIAL MOVEMENT AGAINST THE CARCERAL STATE & CRIME POLITICS

In the presentation, Dr. Mays will highlight major findings both from his doctoral dissertation and current research projects, examining a political period in hip-hop during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He argues that in hip-hop's formative period, the cultural phenomenon became an important site for protests against the expansion of the criminal justice system that targeted black life.
