Mission
Academic Advising at Baldwin Wallace University is a developmental process of faculty members working with students to strategize, develop, and implement a plan related to students’ educational, career, and personal goals. Through this interactive relationship, students learn how to utilize resources and tools to make effective, self-directed decisions. While this process is a collaborative effort, the ultimate responsibility for making decisions rests with the individual student.

Academic Advising is available to all students who are admitted to Baldwin Wallace University. Advising for full-time undergraduate day students is provided by faculty and Learning Center specialists and coordinated by the Office of Academic Advising. Students who have declared a major will be advised by faculty in that department or school. Students whose majors are undecided are advised by a faculty member in a department of interest, a faculty member who works with undecided students, or by the Office of Academic Advising.

Students should contact the Office of Academic Advising to talk to an advising professional about planning their courses, to discuss academic issues, or exploring different major or minors.

Burrell Memorial Observatory (1940) was a gift of Mrs. Katherine Ward Burrell in honor of her husband, a widely known designer and engineer who built some of the world’s largest telescopes. It contains a 13 3/8-inch Warner and Swasey refracting telescope, display room, astronomy classrooms. The telescope is used in astronomy instruction by the Department of Physics. The interior of the building has been refurbished to suit current uses. Burrell is one of Ohio’s most beautiful surviving vintage observatories.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee mandated by federal law to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects participating in research activities. The law is specific to research conducted or supported by a federal department or agency. However, a majority of research institutions, including Baldwin Wallace University, voluntarily apply this regulation (45 CFR 46) to all research conducted at their site, regardless of status or source of funding. The IRB achieves its primary function, protecting the rights and welfare of subjects participating in research including their rights to give informed consent and to have their safety protected from undue risk, by educating researchers. An educated investigator makes the IRB's job easier.

Purpose and Commitment

Baldwin Wallace University is committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of both human and animal subjects involved in the conduct of research by BW faculty, students, and staff. Baldwin Wallace supports responsible research which promises to increase knowledge and understanding, and encourages the highest ethical standards among BW researchers. To ensure these safeguards and standards are met, the Office of Responsible Research houses an Institutional Review Board (IRB), for the protection of human subjects and, an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), for the protection of animal subjects.

Baldwin Wallace University has three libraries to assist students. Ritter Library provides access to books, periodicals, reference librarians, study rooms, curriculum center materials, AV materials and much more. The University Archivist is located in Room 224 of Ritter Library. The building also houses The Learning Center, Writing Lab, and Reading Center (located on the top floor of the building). Jones Music Library​ supports the undergraduate program of the Conservatory of Music and is located in Merner-Pfeiffer Hall. The Riemenschneider Bach Institute (RBI) is located in the Boesel Musical Arts Building and functions primarily as a research library.

The mail center receives student mail and packages, distributing mail every weekday to students' secured mailboxes in their residence halls. Packages are kept in the mail center in Bonds Hall for pick-up. Students are notified by email when a package is received. Outgoing mail pick up is also available to students.

The Baldwin Wallace University Marching Yellow Jackets is a spirited ensemble of musicians from all areas of the BW campus. Membership is open to anyone attending BW. The band also includes the Jackettes, a flag/dance team that includes women representing a wide variety of majors and interests. The Marching Yellow Jackets perform at all home football games. The band has two 2- hour rehearsals a week and also has a short rehearsal the day of a performance.

Ovation is a campus-wide annual celebration of student success across all disciplines. All academic departments and faculty members are encouraged to participate. Ovation provides an opportunity to showcase student achievement in a variety of ways including but not limited to, artwork, performance of an original musical composition or a short play, reading an original essay, story or poem, video or PowerPoint presentations, exhibition of art project or research poster presentations.

Research or other scholarly, creative work showcased at OVATION may be in the form of a poster session, oral presentation, performance, or video exhibit.
