Brooke Walburn, a senior creative writing major and sociology minor at Baldwin Wallace University, has embarked on an entrepreneurial publishing journey with her debut novel, The Mind Field. With characters and themes exploring love, loss, and self-discovery, Walburn brings to life a story conceived during her sophomore year of high school. After years of writing and determination, Walburn's passion is coming to fruition with The Mind Field's release on February 11th.
Walburn's inspiration came while coping with the grieving community at her high school after an impactful loss. Writing became an outlet to process complex emotions and craft a narrative that supports readers experiencing grief or struggle. As she progressed through the writing process, "I thought, 'You know what, I'm technically starting a business, and I'm doing this on my own. What if I talk to LaunchNET?'"
Navigating self-publishing as a first-time author posed challenges like establishing an LLC, securing copyright, and fronting publishing costs. With the help of BW's LaunchNET program, Walburn navigated the transition into publishing her work independently and forming Balamenti, LLC. "LaunchNET not only wants to help and see your success but also be a part of it."
While completing her degree, Walburn channels lessons from her characters and storytelling into her personal growth. Translating ideals onto the page has helped Walburn find more confidence in expressing herself. "I think I have learned there are just some things that characters say, and I'm like, 'You're so right, I should do that.' I try to teach myself that it's okay to stand up to someone if they're doing something wrong."
As publication approaches, Walburn looks forward to finally discussing her work with excited readers. By taking the road less traveled with self-publishing, Walburn and The Mind Field showcase the rewards of pursuing a passion with hard work and an openness to forge your own path. "Do it! I didn't even think of myself as an entrepreneur. I think that everybody should find something they're passionate about. LaunchNET can make it work."
Walburn will be hosting a book release party on February 25th from 1:00-4:00 pm in the Union Sandstone 3. All are welcome to attend!
