Cherry
The Lynne and George Cherry Piano Scholarship
The Lynne and George Cherry Piano Scholarship
Lynne and George Cherry both dedicated many years of their professional lives to teaching piano at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. George served the students of BW for 32 years. He was chair of the piano department for many years and spent the last seven years of his tenure as the associate director of the Conservatory. Lynne was a member of the adjunct piano faculty for 14 years. The pianists met at the University of Illinois where they both studied with Soulima Stravinsky.
They often performed together in recital and were married 50 years prior to George's death in 2005. Their love for great music transcended all genres. In particular they had great affinity for the romantic and modern eras and played and taught with a great sense of playfulness and humor. They loved music with both structural integrity as well as the requirement for bold and passionate expression.
They both were known for making young musicians better players; to understand the intent of the music beyond learning how to play the notes. Their teaching methods were unusual and required of the student an interest and appreciation for the music's particular language and zeitgeist. They expected, and got, great results from their students. This scholarship rewards exceptional potential. It is intended to be a recognition of the commitment, passion and belief that goes into the best playing of keyboard music; and a life in the Arts.
