    The Dr. Dante G. Scarpelli Scholarship

    Reason Established: Dr. Dante G. Scarpelli '50 served as noted cancer researcher and former chairman of the pathology department at Northwestern University Medical School. During his 44-medical career, Dr. Scarpelli devoted himself to cancer research, focusing on the chemical causes of cancer and most recently identifying genes in human tissue that were susceptible to cancer mutations. He continued his research until a few days before his death at age 71. He was a native of Padua, Italy.

    Reason Established: Rose L. Schalla '49 earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Baldwin-Wallace in Chemistry and Mathematics. Her career at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lewis Research Center spanned over 3 decades. Her work in chemical research supported the work of the Center's focus on jet propulsion as well as on the safe handling and performance of rocket fuels. Her last work was on the research and development of solar energy systems. Preference in making awards is for female students majoring in chemistry, mathematics, or physics.

    Reason Established: Robert E. Schlea joined the faculty of Baldwin-Wallace College as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in 1957.     Reason Established: The Carl & Margaret Schluer Scholarship Fund was established by their son, Mr. John Schluer in honor and memory of his parents. Dedicated music teachers at the Conservatory for thirty-one and thirty years respectively, the Schluers also were known as outstanding performers in the Cleveland area. Carl Schluer also taught orchestration and conducting and was the author of a book on score reading. He was active in the invitation of the Bach Festival and he and Margaret both performed in the Festival concerts. They enriched the lives of students and the Baldwin Wallace community through their commitment to music.

    Reason established: A life income agreement established through the Pooled Income Fund with the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church between Mrs. Vern Hakes (Evlyn Scott Hakes) and Baldwin-Wallace, will create a $10,000 endowment. The Rev. James A. Scott Pre-Theology Scholarship Fund shall honor and provide lasting tribute to Rev. Scott who served as pastor of the United Methodist Church of Berea and instructor at Baldwin-Wallace College from 1926-1931.

She taught instrumental music in the Cleveland Heights Public Schools for five years before leaving to raise her five daughters, then teaching private clarinet lessons out of her home. Throughout her life, she was active in many music organizations, including Mu Phi Epsilon, Fortnightly Musical Club and Musical Art Society and was an avid supporter of the Cleveland Orchestra. Following his wife Marian's passing in 2009, BW received a portion of their estate. Baldwin-Wallace College honored him with an LL.D. degree in 1946 and he later served as College Trustee.     Reason Established: David S. Soltesz fulfilled a 33-year career as reference specialist at Fairview Park Branch and materials selection team for the 28 Branch Cuyahoga County Public Library. He was an avid reader and had a strong service commitment to library patrons. His interest in music, art, architecture, politics and literature made him an unusually well-rounded person. He produced a large body of abstract art in acrylics and water colors. His collection of classical and eclectic music was sizable. David's life exemplified the value of a liberal arts education. He came to value highly the community and programs of Baldwin Wallace. Preference is for students majoring in instrumental performance, based on the recommendation of The Dean of the Conservatory of Music.

    Reason Established: The Dorothy (Potosnak) Sotak Vocal Scholarship was established by Eileen Sotak and William Kessler in memory of Eileen's mother, Dorothy Sotak. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide tuition support for a Conservatory of Music voice major from Cuyahoga County. As a student at John Hay High School from 1939 to 1941, Dorothy belonged to the choir where she participated in city-wide competitions with award-winning success. She continued to love the arts in Cleveland, especially the Museum of Art and The Cleveland Orchestra, and passed this passion on to her children who remember Dorothy singing along to records of Broadway musicals while she prepared meals and worked around the house.

The couple's children established the music scholarship to memorialize their parents and to encourage talented music majors with financial need.

    Reason Established: Southwest General Health Center’s (SWGHC) commitment to the local community is reflected in the establishment of this generous scholarship supporting students from local high schools who aspire to study nursing at Baldwin Wallace University. This scholarship supports SWGHC’s need for skilled healthcare professionals while endorsing the quality of healthcare education offered at Baldwin Wallace.

    The fund will support one student from Berea-Midpark, Columbia Station, Olmsted Falls and Strongsville high schools (4 total) entering BW’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program each year. Students will receive $2,500 per year renewable through graduation as long as they remain Nursing majors in good academic standing.

    Reason established: Charles Spahr's service on the B W Board of Trustees began in 1958. From 1964 to 1978 he provided leadership as Chairman of the Board. As the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Oil of Ohio, he oversaw the creation of the Alaska Pipeline. The Spahr Chair in Corporation and Managerial Ethics and The Spahr Learning Resource Center in Ritter Library are testimony to his leadership over many years at Baldwin Wallace College.

    Reason Established: Nelson G. Spoth, BW class of 1940, contributed much to society through his career in business, management, and engineering. Nelson established the scholarship in 1990 and has been increased by memorial gifts and regular donations from Doris Spoth Snedeker '46 whose name is also honored.     Reason Established: Professor of French Andrew Talton along with BW English Professor Ted Harakas led a successful Seminar in Europe Program that served hundreds of loyal alumni. Professor Talton began his career at BW in 1970 and served as co-director of the program until his retirement in 1998. He passed away in 2011.     Reason Established: Lee Thomas graduated from Baldwin Wallace in 1976 with a degree in accounting. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and a letterman in football and baseball. Upon graduation, Lee went to work for Ernst & Young. He retired as Managing Partner of Ernst & Young's Cleveland Office in 2014. Lee has been a member of BW's Board of Trustees since 2002, served on the Business Department Advisory Council and was a founding member of the Center for Innovation and Growth Advisory Council. Cathi graduated from BW in 1976 with a degree in mathematics. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, White Rose recipient and a member of Laurels. After graduation, Cathi worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, as a teacher in the Midpark school system and eventually became a stay at home mom raising the children. They have three adult children, one of whom graduated from BW. They are establishing this scholarship to recognize the efforts and needs of students majoring in accounting and computer sciences.

    Reason Established:  Dr. Carol A. Thompson was a well-known and highly respected instructor and administrator during her 40+ year career in education. Graduating from Otterbein College with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, she continued her education at The University of Illinois (MA) and then matriculated to The Ohio State University where she received her Ph.D. Dr. Thompson’s professional career was primarily spent at Baldwin Wallace where she devoted her time and talents to her students as a member of the Women’s Health and Physical Education Department and then as Associate Academic Dean until her retirement. Dr. Thompson loved to golf, camp, play tennis and travel between Cleveland, Maine and Florida. Her generosity knew no bounds and she is remembered for her firm but fair management style and the lifetime of dedication she showed Baldwin Wallace and her students. The donor’s preference is to award scholarships to students who can show evidence of financial need.

    The Reverend Dr. John Cecil Trever Scholarship

    Reason Established: Rev. Dr. John Trever served as a religion professor at BW from 1959-1975 and was considered an expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He was the first scholar to photograph them on a trip to Jerusalem in 1948. Following Dr. Trever’s time at BW, he held an academic position at the Claremont School of Theology, where his collection of photographs of the Dead Sea Scrolls is still maintained. Dr. Trever’s oldest son, John, graduated from Syracuse University in 1965. He served as a Minuteman Missile Launch commander and captain in the US Air Force. From 1976, John has been the editorial cartoonist for the Albuquerque Journal. Dr. Trever’s second son, James E. Trever, graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in 1968 with a degree in biology and went on to serve in active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1973 and then as a civil servant until 2008. His nephew, George Trever, graduated from BW in 1967 with a degree in physics, minoring in mathematics and pursued a career with the US Air Force and Sandia National Laboratories. John, Jim and George wish to support their father’s and uncle’s commitment to BW and contributions to the study of religious artifacts.

    Reason Established: An outstanding student leader at Baldwin-Wallace College, Melissa graduated from BW in 1991 with a degree in business administration. At BW, she was a class officer, a sister in the Delta Zeta sorority and recognized as an Outstanding Senior. Following BW, she completed a master's degree at Ohio's Miami University and went on to hold student affairs positions at Emory University, Portland State University, and finally Colorado State University where she had served as Director of Admissions and had recently been appointed the Vice President for Enrollment and Access. Melissa was known for her infectious positive attitude and passion for helping students succeed in higher education. The Melissa Trifiletti Award in Women's Leadership was established by friends and family to honor her memory and recognize female students who embody Melissa's ability to inspire and encourage others toward success.
