Internships

The Politics and Global Citizenship Department is here to help you find real-world experience and career connections. How do I find an internship? Look through the opportunities below; search Handshake, the university's job and internship portal; or come chat with Dr. Mannies, the PGC Internship Coordinator, wmannies@bw.edu. You can also reach out to organizations you admire and want to work with. Finally, if you have a job with new, interesting, and relevant experience, you may be able to receive academic internship credit for that.

Government

Representative Shontel Brown (D-OH, 11th district) offers paid internships at her Cleveland and D.C. offices.

Representative Max Miller (R-OH, 7th district) offers internships and has offices in Medina, Parma, and D.C.

Representative Emilia Sykes (D-OH, 13th district) offers internships and has offices in Akron and D.C.

Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) offers internships at his local offices (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati) as well as D.C. You may apply for a paid internship here, but the local Cleveland office is always happy to accommodate unpaid interns (email Dr. Mannies at wmannies@bw.edu for details, or reach out directly to their Cleveland office).

Senator John Husted (R - OH) offers internships at his D.C. and state offices (Cleveland, Columbus, Middletown, and Toledo). Apply here.

Running Start Congressional Fellowship is a program for women that combines a Congressional internship with virtual training and an all expense-paid, three-day workshop in Washington, D.C. If you are interested in being a leader in government, then you would benefit from this program!

The Cuyahoga County Public Policy Fellowship Program. "Fellows are placed within County departments for a period of eight weeks during the months of June and July. Department placements provide opportunities for students to build their professional profile through work on special projects, policy development, and research. In addition to department placements, scheduled enrichment activities provide fellows with an opportunity to make professional connections with senior staff and introduce fellows to the diverse work of County government." Every department of the federal government offers internship and employment opportunities nationwide through the USA Jobs website and Pathways Program. Everything from the Department of Energy to the Secretary of State's office to the Parks Service. Search for summer opportunities, future careers, and more.

The Legislative Fellowship Program. Each year, the Ohio General Assembly sponsors up to 24 individuals for a full-time, 13-month, paid (with benefits) opportunity. Fellows work with the Ohio House of Representatives, the Ohio Senate, or the Ohio Government Telecommunications (OGT)/The Ohio Channel. Fellows must already have a Bachelor's degree before beginning the fellowship. Read more about this opportunity here.

The Ohio House of Representatives offers volunteer internships for students based in Columbus.

Ohio Export Internship Program. An excellent opportunity to work at the nexus of economic development, international business, and government. Find out more here.

If you're going back home to Pennsylvania for the summer, apply to the Municipal Intern Program to get real experience solving local issues.

Are you a woman interested in being a leader in politics? The non-partisan NEW Leadership program aims to increase the representation of women in American politics. The intensive, five-day summer institute prepares college women for the reality of political campaigns and asks them to run for office or work on campaigns and issues that align with their values.  Students will participate in and attend a series of exciting events each day, including a day-long visit to the Ohio Supreme Court and Ohio Statehouse, an evening of networking with elected officials from across the state, and a week full of exciting workshops and panel discussions around citizenship, leadership, and fostering lasting relationships for their professional network. Politics

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression hires summer interns to work at its Philadelphia office. In addition, its Campus Scholars Program offers virtual, semester-long, paid opportunities to advance the mission of free speech on campus.

Ohio Women in Government is a non-partisan organization dedicated to supporting the development of all women engaged in government and public policy in Ohio. If you secure an unpaid, government internship, you can apply for a scholarship through OWG to pay you $$$ for that internship. See here.

PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) is a nationwide NGO that organizes campaigns and lobbies for public health and environmental legislation. They have state-based campaigns as well. See opportunities with OH PIRG here.

Ohio Citizen Action advocates for public health, environmental quality, and consumers. Their goal is to protect democracy and create a sustainable and equitable future. Find out more about volunteer, employment, and internship opportunities here.

Matriots Ohio. This group works to get women elected in Ohio. If this interests you, reach out to inquire about current and future volunteer or internship opportunities.

Law

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office. Read more about the various opportunities and apply here.

Legal Aid Society of Cleveland. Each summer, a few undergraduates are given the opportunity to work with  one of Cleveland's oldest and most respected legal organizations. LASC works with underserved clients who cannot afford representation. Summer employees provide office support and interface with clients while working closely with LASC attorneys. The ACLU of Cleveland (American Civil Liberties Union) offers internships for recent high school grads, undergraduates, and law students.

The Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas offers summer internships. Reach out to inquire about current or future opportunities.

There are many divisions in the City of Cleveland Department of Law. Read more here, and reach out to inquire about current or future opportunities.

The Cleveland Municipal Court offers paid, summer aide opportunities. Aides assist judges with court business and may go on local field trips (the Coroner's office!). This internship is perfect for a high school grad or first-year college student. Reach out to the court to learn about current and future opportunities.

The Council on Criminal Justice. A non-partisan organization dedicated to grounding criminal justice policy in empirical evidence. Here.

Sustainability

The Student Conservation Association is a nationwide organization dedicated to training the conservation leaders of tomorrow. Interns are paid and generally work full-time, temporary positions (summer). Find out more here. This is also a good place to look for post-grad employment, and can help you network with other sustainability-related organizations in the Northeast Ohio region.

NOWCorps (Northeast Ohio Watershed Corps) offers paid internships for students wanting to engage in watershed restoration.

RSM offers a summer, Cleveland-based Cyber Strategy Internship, but it is a nationwide corporation offering internships in a variety of areas.

Jobs

Be a part of the inaugural All Voting Election Administration Cohort. The Fall 2025 Ohio Next Generation Election Administration program is a 13-week introduction to the field of election administration for current students and early career Ohioans. Cohort members will gain familiarity with the election administration field by learning from current and former election administrators and government leaders, experiencing firsthand the inner workings of Ohio’s elections and nonpartisan voter registration and education activities in compliance with state and federal election laws, and ultimately building a network of contacts within the election administration field. The Cleveland Council of World Affairs offers two programs. The Global Ambassador program is a year-long program for emerging leaders aged 25-35 that explores opportunities and challenges for global cities related to sustainability, economic development, and community building. There are interactive workshops, roundtable sessions, and a study trip abroad. The Cleveland LEADS program is an 8-week course designed for young professionals aged 20-35 to explore their own leadership style and how they can become more globally-minded leaders through three program pillars: leadership development, global competency, and international exchange.
