What counts?

Student Directors
  • Maintain (4) office hours per week at the Brain Center for Community Engagement, 1 of which will be the weekly team meeting.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training team members and leadersFacilitate weekly team meetings and include team-building activities.
  • Facilitate weekly team meetings and include team-building activities.
  • Collaboratively develop leader retreats and monthly all-teams meeting.
  • Data management.
First Generation Advisory Council
  • Participate in 1 monthly First Gen Student Advisory meetings.
  • Be willing to speak on behalf of the First Gen Student Advisory for classes, events or administrative meetings regarding First Gen community at BW.
  • Participate in the planning for First Gen Celebration (annual event in Fall semester).
  • Assist with planning, outreach and facilitation of First Gen First Friday events.
  • Participate in First Gen outreach, mentoring and resource sharing.
Project Affinity

Project Affinity is an 8-week living-learning summer internship program facilitated by the BW Brain Center for Community Engagement. Selected participants intern at a Cleveland nonprofit four days a week, gaining great professional experience and exposure to Cleveland leaders, assets and opportunities. Then spend one day a week immersed in Ohio's social action community engaging in workshops, tours, and team building activities.

Brain Fellow

During the yearlong program, Brain Fellows meet weekly on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. to:

  • Explore topics of social change & leadership during weekly meetings and community events with local leaders.
  • Utilize Change the "A Student Guide to Social Action" as a frame to examine their own personal leadership philosophy and approach (book provided to students at no cost).
  • Connect with social change agents in the greater community during the annual Community Plunge Day and throughout program meetings and events.
  • Attend a state-wide Leadership ConferenceDetermine a social change topic of focus, developing a "Vision Stand" as a culminating project during the Fall Semester.

During the second semester, participants will create a social change project with the following components:

  • Focus on a social change issue
  • Collaborate with an organization or group throughout the process
  • Create a plan for sustainability; it cannot be a "one & done" programPresent reflections as a group at the annual Ovation.
  • Present reflections as a group at the annual Ovation.
Alternative Breaks
  • Facilitate team meetings for trips (team building activities, education on social action topic and active citizenship.
  • Plan and lead alternative break trips (week-long immersion into a community addressing a social action topic).
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training team members and leaders.
  • Collaboratively develop leader retreats and monthly all-teams meeting.
