Thinking about dropping or withdrawing from a course?

It’s a big decision, and it can affect more than just your schedule. Before you make any changes, we recommend talking with an advisor so you understand the impact and explore all options.

Below are a few things to consider before moving forward. Once you've read through these notes, you can scroll to the bottom to browse the different drop/withdrawal options.

Credit hours this semester

Dropping or withdrawing from a course will reduce the number of credit hours you are registered for this semester.

To remain a full-time student, you must be AT or ABOVE 12 credit hours. Dropping to part-time status can impact your Financial Aid, Housing, Athletic eligilbirty, and graduation plans.

Financial Aid and payment

Dropping or withdrawing from a course can affect your tuition charges and financial aid eligibility.

Some scholarships and grants require you to maintain a specific number of credits. Always check with the Financial Aid Office before making changes, so you understand the impact on your account.

Required courses and program sequencing

Every major and minor includes required courses that often build on each other. Additionally, some courses are only offered once a year or every other year.

Dropping a class could delay your progress if it serves as a prerequisite for future courses.

We recommend meeting with an advisor to understand any sequence-specific courses that may be impacted by withdrawal or dropping a course.

Exhausting resources

Make sure you have explored all available support. Using these resources can make the difference between staying in a course and needing to withdraw.

Dropping vs. Withdrawing

Dropping a course:

  1. Removes from schedule
  2. Will NOT appear on transcript
  3. Can be completed by student
  4. Full-semester: Occurs within the first week of classes
  5. Mini-mester: Occurs on the first Wednesday of classes

Students may drop a full semester course during the first week of the term and before the first Wednesday of the first week for minimester courses.

See the Academic Calendar for exact dates and summer dates.

Withdrawing a course:

  1. Removes from schedule
  2. Will receive a "W" on transcript
  3. Does NOT impact GPA
  4. Requires a form
  5. Full-semester: Deadline occurs within the first 9 weeks
  6. Mini-mester: Deadline occurs within the first 4 weeks

Students can withdraw from a course by submitting a Class Withdrawal form available on the Office of Registration and Records website.

There are deadlines to withdraw from courses, which are visible on the Academic Calendar.
