  • McGill, Thomas and Carol
The Thomas and Carol McGill Scholarship

The Thomas and Carol McGill Scholarship

Reason Established: Born and raised in Euclid, Ohio, Tom McGill excelled in athletics and demonstrated qualities of leadership and a strong work ethic with average academic performance in high school. While he had not considered many options after high school, his pastor and coaches encouraged him to consider Baldwin Wallace. Fifty years after graduating from high school, during his acceptance speech for Euclid High School Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Tom shared some highlights from life's journey to that point: "My most significant athletic and academic accomplishments came while attending Baldwin Wallace. In high school, I participated in junior varsity and then two years of varsity sports, whereas in college, I was able to participate in varsity sports as a freshman and was fortunate to earn twelve varsity letters in football and track. And, I certainly was significantly more successful academically."

Tom came from a humble upbringing and his family was not in a position to help him financially to afford tuition and fees at BW. With great determination, Tom worked 20 - 60 hours per week, participated on two sports teams, joined the ATO fraternity and married the love of his life during his junior year. As a senior, Tom was captain of the football team and was recognized as BW's most valuable offensive player and Cleveland Touchdown Club local college player of the year. BW alumnus Dave Benson hired Tom to work for him at Proctor & Gamble which launched a very successful 32-year career. In May 2000, Tom retired as Director for Business Development at P&G. In response to the guidance, assistance and mentoring Tom received from coaches, faculty and mentors, he and Carol would like to come full-circle to make an impact for Baldwin Wallace students like Tom. The McGills are committed to helping young men and women attend and graduate from BW. Their preference is to help students who, like Tom, need financial assistance in order to attend BW, demonstrate leadership skills and a strong work ethic.

She did her student teaching at the same school she had attended (and the same principal was still there). Joanne appreciated the good coordination during her student teaching between the school and the college. Joann's teaching career spanned more than 2 decades and four school districts in Ohio.
